Buying a Reading ticket is the ultimate stress

Reading

I don’t think I have ever really had any sort of stress like it. When I bought my day ticket for 2006 I thought that was a pain in the arse but this takes the biscuit. After sending an order form through Stargreen it had told me that the allocation had sold out. So then it was onto Seetickets to see if constant refreshing would save me. It did. Just. At 9:15pm, all but the NME allocation of weekend tickets had sold out and I had reacted in time and bought my weekend ticket. No confirmation e-mail as of yet but I have proof that these tickets are mine and I’ll be pretty peeved if anything changes otherwise.

Today’s pointless survey: car park smells

Car park

There are many things that just seem utterly pointless and most of them tend to be surveys. For example, today we found out that stinky aromas are putting off a third of car park users. The NCP, who I presume are a car park organisation as Sky News didn’t mention who the hell they were – bad journalism right there, said that they plan to use this data to make sure that car parks smell less stinky. They’ve even said that they plan to use new technology to make these places smell like “roses, freshly-baked bread and cut grass.”

Here are the details of the survey they did to come to this amazing conclusion:

Of the 2,000 people polled, two in three said stairwells were the worst-smelling part of car parks, with one in three associating these areas with the smell of urine. Those surveyed put flowers as their favourite aromatic smell, followed by mint, cut grass, freshly-baked bread and fresh fruit. Bubblegum, coffee and even petrol were also considered favourite fragrances.

Do you really think that anyone in their right mind would want to kick up a fuss about the smell of car parks. I admit that, with the lack of car and reliant of public transport to get to places, I haven’t been to one in a while but all you could smell then was just fresh air. There were no bad odours like the urine of a tramp or a vomit of some club-goer the night before or anything like that.

Thankfully, one person has come out and said that attention needs to be put toward other things like security. Hugh Bladon of the Association of British Drivers says:

If that’s what NCP is going to do then good luck to them. But car parks are always going to smell because of what they are, big blocks of damp concrete. Stairwells particularly smell because people use them as toilets. Sorting that out would be the best way to solve the problem. The smell wouldn’t put me off using a car park, the price it charges to park there would.

I would like to know whether or not anyone thinks differently but I’m just utterly baffled that this is such a big deal for the NCP.

La Tasca: a moneygeddon beating option

La Tasca

Because of the moneygeddon (I thank Charlie Brooker’s Newswipe for that new term), eating out can be a very tricky thing. On the one hand you would like to eat somewhere that is relatively good in terms of food but on the other hand you would like to cut costs. This brings me on very nicely to La Tasca. Every now and again, the Spanish tapas chain offers a 50% off ALL food voucher, which is easily one of the beat deals on the market right now.

For example, I met up with a few people in Edinburgh before a Franz Ferdinand concert a couple of months ago and I said that I had one of these vouchers so we decided to go there. We had whatever tapas we wanted (although this was about 2-3 dishes a person) and the total cost between all six of us was £45. Instead of paying nearly £100, we saved a godlike amount and left incredibly happy and well-fed!

Martin Lewis, who runs the excellent financial advice site Money Saving Expert, went there recently and raved about it in his blog:

Do vouchers work for restaurants? Well, I just tried somewhere new & loved it!

Having scanned down the restaurant vouchers list, the other day, to see what was available. My eyes popped onto a La Tasca 50% off deal; actually better than a 2for1 as it’s 50% off all food including starters and desserts.

Now I’m not the biggest fan of tapas, but decided to give it a try anyway. We went to the one in Chiswick. Interestingly, there was also a Tapas for £10 deal on the table. It’s an all you can eat offer, but on a limited range of plates, so I did a quick calculation, comparing my voucher to the all you can eat for value.

Using the voucher meant more range, and lots of dishes; in the end we had nine main plates and a dessert each, plus drinks for £21 for two. Now frankly this is big greedy pig territory – a serious amount of food – though of course I manfully did my bit and finished it off. Yet it did make La Tasca not that much more expensive than Le Tesco (ok, well maybe quite a bit more but still pretty reasonable for a night out in a restaurant).

The food was great. I was especially impressed by the Mushroom croquettes, though the orange sorbet and chocolate and orange cheesecake at the end were big competition too.

So for me, a personal thumbs up for a seriously good value meal; and for La Tasca – it’s acquired a new future new customer.

And if it’s good enough for him, then it’s certainly good enough for me.

I’ve only just realised…

Thorpe Park vouchers

I have far too much work to do. I have about seven weeks until uni is over for the second year and I head off to Brighton for The Great Escape and I have a heap of work to do. I have to do more work on Techmole, which hasn’t been going too badly but could have had a smoother ride thanks to the arsery of one person, an essay over Easter as well as a dissertation proposal and finish off a magazine for print. That’s a sizeable chunk of work that is going to dominate my life for the next few weeks.

And what am I doing right now in this busy and hectic moment in time? Organising a trip to Thorpe Park. Priorities!

The Damned United

Brian Clough

Words can’t express how much I want to see this film. For those who don’t know, The Damned United is a film about legendary football manager Brian Clough’s time at Leeds United. It sounds simple enough but Clough was such a huge character that it surprised me that it took so long for a film about him to be made. Michael Sheen, who has already imitated Tony Blair (The Queen) and Sir David Frost (Frost/Nixon), plays Clough and it looks brilliant. The problem is that (aside from money to go and see the film in the first place) my usual cinema partner in crime, the girlfriend, has no interest in football whatsoever and doesn’t fancy it.

What would make her change her mind?
