The sunny weekend in Brighton

Brighton Pier

I spent the weekend in Brighton again. I was disappointed last year not to get a good weekend in terms of weather so imagine my delight at the glorious sunshine that basked the residents and tourists (not just down south I presume) – not even hayfever could really ruin it. Yesterday we just wondered around doing some shopping. As well as a couple of CDs and a vinyl purchase from the many great record shops that are littered throughout the town. But perhaps my finest purchase as a £5 polyphonic keyboard from a flea market. It is the cutest musical instrument ever! Yes, some of the keys are broken and yes, it runs on batteries, but I enjoy playing it even if the notes are limited and the songs you can perform are miniscule. Here’s me playing something you may recognise:

I’m also recording that on a new camera that was bought for me by my stepmum. It’s very nice and I’ll test it out properly when I see Patrick Wolf tomorrow.

My 21st birthday

Crocodile cake

I’ve had yet another busy few days but I can now unwind for the most part. Yesterday was my 21st and I got many kind messages from family and friends. Not many presents this year because I wasn’t really fussed but I got tickets for Derren Brown next month in London’s West End (I’m really chuffed with that – I’ve been wanting to see him for ages now), Punch-Out!! for the Wii (I’ll be playing it this evening) and male grooming vouchers so far. I’m seeing my Dad in Brighton this weekend and I don’t know what on earth he has got me but I’m happy with whatever really. I bought a lot of CDs and one vinyl with my birthday money and that made me immensely happy.

The evening was pretty decent. We went to this new cafe in a branch of EX (extreme sports shop) that served exotic sounding meat like crocodile. Me and Aino had a crocodile cake each – think of a fishcake but with crocodile instead. It was very tasty, as was my rump steak main course with fat chips and chargrilled vegetables. After that, I went home and saw Manchester United honour my birthday by crumbling to a brilliant Barcelona.

“We should have a general election now”

QT

This was the sentiment echoed by the audience members of Question Time yesterday (though not neccessarily Martin Bell, pictured above). I can’t even begin to tell you how much of a stupid idea that is. I have so much to say about UK politics but I’ve ranted it too many times already to too many people. All I’ll say is this – yes, level of corruption stinks, but having an election now only means David Cameron screws up our country sooner rather than later.

Junior Apprentice

Sir Alan Sugar

If you thought that Ben from this year’s The Apprentice was an immature idiot then wait until you catch the junior spin off next year:

Sir Alan Sugar is to put a group of 10 teenagers through their paces in a youth version of The Apprentice, the BBC has announced. Junior Apprentice will feature five girls and five boys aged 16 and 17, who will be set a variety of business tasks to test their entrepreneurial skills. The winner will win a prize worth up to £25,000 and tailored to his or her individual career prospects. The five-part series will be shown on BBC One next year. Sir Alan has long held an ambition to launch a young version of the hit reality show, telling the BBC News website last year: “I believe it would be an absolute one-off blockbuster. “I’ve even gone to the extent of saying ‘you don’t fire a person’, because God knows what they would call me if I fired an 11-year-old child!” But, according to details of the new series, the entrepreneur will do exactly that.

Usually I am a cynic when it comes to spin offs but because The Apprentice, which for my money has been one of the most enjoyable TV programs of this year and previous years, I welcome it with open arms. This show has never put a foot wrong in terms of entertainment.

And relax…

Deerhunter

I’ve been away for a bit but it isn’t because I’ve forgotten about the blog, more the fact that I’ve been insanely busy. Since last Tuesday I’ve been to a gig in London to see Placebo, spend the following day at uni trying to get all my work done desperately, spending four days in Brighton covering The Great Escape (I might blog about Brighton at a later date – it was a joy to be back down there after two years), see Deerhunter at the Scala and then see Metric at the Electric Ballroom last night. I also did my first ‘proper’band interview with Josh, the bassist of Metric. It helped that was a cool guy to speak to and it made interviewing him a real pleasure. There were two or three things I could have done better in hindsight but it was a solid first experience and I’ll definitely learn from it.

I was meant to be going to Thorpe Park today but my back has been feeling strained the last couple of days so I’m relaxing at home to ensure it gets better. Tomorrow I will try and get back to work – I have the Manic Streets Preachers album to review (I’m looking forward to listening to it as I find the backstory behind it really fascinating) as well as three gig reviews to do at least.

More frighteningly, I turn 21 this time next week. Is it odd that I don’t treat 21 as a special birthday?
