Tomorrow is Enigma Day!

Enigma

Tomorrow I get see Derren Brown live for the first time at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s glamorous West End. This has been something I’ve been looking forward to for ages since I’ve wanted to see his live shows for ages. Provided I can shake this mysterious cold/hayfever hybrid full enjoyment is expected. For those unfamiliar with potentially how entertaining Derren’s live shows are, you don’t need to look no further than An Evening Of Wonders, which you can now buy on DVD. In the linked clip, Derren is trying to force the person in the audience to pick the wrong box out of one containing £500 and one containing £5000.  Watch it until the very end for a true ‘WTF?’ moment.

On a sidenote you can add his blog to your favourites as it has posts not just by him but by a wonderful team of people who like weird things. If you like his stuff on TV, you’ll like reading this.

A summary of Saturday night TV

Totally Saturday
Proof of how low Saturday night television has gotten:

BBC1: Totally Saturday – a trashy, lame, forgettable entertainment show that once again is a waste of the talents of Graham Norton.*

BBC 2: Trooping The Colour highlights – Dull, dull, dull.

ITV1: All Star Mr & Mrs – Philip Schofield and Fern Britton host the most annoying retro gameshow revival ever.

Channel 4: Big Brother – it’s old and predictable.

Five: CSI – Just about tolerable but not every week.

*I recognise that Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow is on but this array of shows I often find very hit and miss. I’d also rather watch full stand up routines than shortened ten minute versions.

I wish TV schedulers would just stop thinking that everyone goes out on a Saturday night because there really is nothing worth watching anymore. Today has been an absolute crawl of a day and television just hasn’t helped one bit.

My new camera is amazing at videos

So I got a new camera for my 21st birthday. I didn’t ask for one but it was greatly appreciated as it is a much better camera than my Canon PowerShot A460. The Nikon Coolpix doesn’t improve much in the way of shutter speed but what it does have is much less noise on its photos and much better video recording. I want to focus on the video recording a bit for the sake of compare and contrast. Here is a video of Talons by Bloc Party at the Forum in London last September:

Very pixelated, not that clear on noise…lots of problems. Now compare it to the video I took of the first couple of songs of the Manic Street Preachers set at the same venue last Monday:

Less pixelated, clearer sound…I’m not saying this is anything like the cameras that the likes of Rob Sheridan and Bob use but for me this is pretty much ideal when doing filming from the frontlines for Musical Chairs.

New UK mobile directory – how to get off it

Mobile phone

You have probably heard in the news that there is a new directory launching for UK mobile phones. It is a service that has access to millions of mobile phone numbers in the UK. On the downside, there is a possibility that you might get lots of annoying calls from nobodies, salesmen and idiots. Fear not though – you can make your mobile become ex-directory. Just follow these instructions:

You can become ex-directory by texting the letter ‘E’ to 118800 from the mobile phone you want to be made ex-directory or you can call us on 0800 138 6263. Standard network charges apply. The first time 118 800 contacts you you will be sent an SMS reminding you about how to become ex-directory. Please allow up to 4 weeks for your ex-directory request to take effect.

The last thing I’d imagine I’d be doing was to echo the comments made by an ITV news reporter but there you go – “you have been warned.”

Bus prices are up again

Arriva

There is a lot of political rubbish that has annoyed me of late and has quite possibly made me a very bad person to be around. My girlfriend yesterday informed that the bus prices were going up again by 10p for a single and 20p for a return. For people who don’t use the buses often, that’ll be miniscule to them. For people like me who rely on buses constantly, it’s more money out of our pockets in the long run. It all reminds me of something for wrote for one of my Year 1 pieces at university.

I think I’ll start this off with an anecdote. Picture the scene at 6pm at Woking. I’ve just had an afternoon of shorthand at university (death by squiggles), have had to walk back to the station in the rain, spent 20 minutes on a train looking out into the gloomy, depressive weather outside and have just walked to the bus station expecting a bus to take me home in about 5 minutes.

So I wait…

And wait…

And wait…

And wait…

It’s now 6:20pm and I still haven’t been able to get on a bus that should have been at Woking about 15 minutes ago. I asked a bus driver where the bus was and he said, in craptacular English, “I don’t know.”

So, I’ve spent 20 minutes in the rain (that, may I add, got worse and worse as time went on) waiting for something to take me home and that is your best excuse?

Buses are the sinners of public transport. In the last year, only half of my buses have actually managed to come on time. Forget complaining about trains – they are actually reliable! Why should I pay £4 for a return ticket for such shoddy service?

I’m not excusing the fact we’re being ripped off on trains too but I think in comparison this is a lot worse. I wouldn’t pay £4.40 for such a lousy service.
