Jeremy Kyle gets new show, families everywhere hide

Jeremy Kyle

Struggling families everywhere should find the nearest sofa and hide behind it. Jeremy Kyle is on the lookout for you. From Digital Spy:

Jeremy Kyle is reportedly set to host a new ITV programme in a deal worth £1 million. The chatshow host will go into people’s homes to offer advice on how they can improve their lives, according to the Sunday Mirror. An ITV spokesman confirmed that discussions are underway, adding: “We’re always looking at ways of developing our talent.” Earlier this year, a judge described Kyle’s current ITV chatshow as cruel and exploitative.

Hold on a sec…Jeremy Kyle is now worth a million quid? I suppose that’s a pretty good incentive for young wannabee television presenters. Get a chatshow, berate your guests constantly, float between Side A and Side B, and have the eyes of a demon. Hey presto! This new program that is being lined really is beginning to sound like a cross between shows like Supernanny and How Clean Is Your House, except with Jeremy Kyle. What the hell is he going to do? Get a job or sit on the jobseeker’s bench, situated in the family’s hallway?

Tim Minchin at the Hammersmith Apollo

I saw Tim Minchin perform what he described as the biggest gig of his career on Saturday and it was very, very good. I’d tell you what he did but he filmed it for a new DVD I believe, so you might as well wait until that comes out. Instead, here’s one he didn’t do:

Is the job market getting better for journalists?

Recession

We might be in our worst recession in modern times but it seems like the worst of the dry journalism jobs situation may be over. In the last week I have seen a flurry of job advertisements, in all mediums, appear on various sites. Journalism.co.uk posted a blog entry today summarising some of the jobs that have popped up in the last week (a few of them it has to be said from Future Publishing):

Web content editor
London, United Kingdom

Publisher/managing editor
Dubai, Dubai

Online editor
London, England

Editor
London, United Kingdom

Researcher
London, England

Staff writer – Edge
Bath, England , England

News correspondents
Leeds, England

Video journalist
London, England

Print executive (maternity leave cover)
London, England

Staff Writer – Rhythm
Bath, United Kingdom

Global technical support representative
City of London, United Kingdom

Hold The Front Page is also posting lots more local journalism job advertisements. Obviously, a lot of these jobs are almost unattainable for me at my level but it does give me an encouraging sign that the market is picking up and that by the time I graduate there will be a more forgiving jobs sector.

One has to hope.

Why the BNP row is non-existent

BNP/BBC

Yes, the BNP are a terrible political party. Their policies, which contain so many traces of racism and homophobia amongst other things, are downright incomprehensible and their leader, Nick Griffin, is a total buffoon. I get this. But surely by blocking him the right to have his say we’re corrupting the whole basis of democracy? As much as you may hate them, the BNP are a legitimate organisation by current UK law and therefore, despite what demo participants like those protesting at the BBC tomorrow may think, have the right to have a platform. And besides, surely Griffin himself will be caught out tomorrow night as his policies get torn apart by other panellists and the audience?

Oh wait, it’s Question Time. The one show that has an audience sent straight from the Moron Factory in Moronsville.

Canvas comes out tomorrow

Canvas

Canvas, the student newspaper of the UCA, gets reborn tomorrow with a new issue. Well, they went to print yesterday and copies do exist but we’re giving them out tomorrow instead. Either way, I’m happy that we’ve got something coming out. Lots of really good stories are in the paper, including my news feature about the perception of autism. I’m really not sure how it’s going to go. It’s such a leftfield article compared to everyone else that it’s hard to figure out how people will react. My course leader said it was ‘brave’. I’m never sure how to take comments like that. Once I have a copy I will try and get the article up on here to show you.

Either way, I’m hoping this is the start of a good year for Canvas. We need to do well to set a good example to the second and first years so that they can carry it on when we leave, and I think we’re on the right track.
