Last week Judd Apatow (producer of nu-gross out films like ‘Knocked Up’, ‘Pineapple Express’ and clones thereof) stood up and made a case for comedy films to have their own category at the Oscars.
His frustrations are understandable. Comedy is not really recognised by the academy and is often snubbed for a whole host of different reasons.
But Apatow is suggesting the Academy treat comedies like animated films, giving them their own category. That is where the argument falls. Apatow may claim that trying to make an hour-and-a-half long film is incredibly hard, but that’s nothing when compared to the workload involved in creating animated films.
