MusicOMH: The Dø at Bush Hall

The first thing you notice about the stage setup for Finnish/French duo The Dø’s show at Bush Hall is just how much stuff there is. A megaphone, saxophones, bells… it’s quite an achievement that they’ve got enough room to move about. Even the set of cymbals and percussion instruments placed towards the back curtain resemble something you’d find at a branch of Lakeland. But that is what’s needed if they want to do a good job of replicating all the different sounds and dynamics of their recorded output, including last year’s enjoyable sophomore effort, Both Ways Open Jaws.

Getting used to the rat race

The last two days have been fairly productive. I’ve been relatively busy at work experience, producing quite a lot of news content. It’s not the romantic vision that so many students think it is but if you go into a placement with visions of glamour and adventure then I feel that you’ll be disappointed very quickly. My expectations were quite realistic in hindsight. I have been enjoying it though. It’s a lot more chilled out than I expected and I’m even going to dare to use the word ‘relaxing’. I’ve gotten used to the rat race fairly quickly. It’s a pretty straightforward journey to work so it’s easy, or at least it would be if the buses in Surrey were not the most unreliable piece of public transport ever used.

All is well, in a nutshell.

#GSMC 09

Kings Place

Today’s Guardian Student Media Conference at King’s Place, pictured above, was very good. Well worth the early wake up call and well worth steep travel prices to get into London. I’ll post more in the forthcoming days (and I’m doing a feature about it for Canvas, the uni newspaper) but here’s all my tweets from the event incase anyone missed them:

11:15: Alan Rusbridger is ‘optimistic’ about the future.
13:46: Had an interesting chat with Paul Morley re criticism of critics.
13:55: Praise must go to the quality of the free lunch.
15:11: Nick Davies winding up. Informative, sweary, and funny.
16:17: How many more times will I hear ‘feed’ or ‘wire’ today? Definitely buzz words of today.
17:37: And that ends the day at #GSMC! Good day in general.

I’d like to write ASAP about this but I am deadly tired and I’ll be better off writing up all of this after a day of hindsight.

Tim Minchin at the Hammersmith Apollo

I saw Tim Minchin perform what he described as the biggest gig of his career on Saturday and it was very, very good. I’d tell you what he did but he filmed it for a new DVD I believe, so you might as well wait until that comes out. Instead, here’s one he didn’t do:

I need to go to this place

Central Perk

I grew up with Friends so, despite the fact that this is an obvious marketing ploy, I would quite like to go here:

From now until October 7, you can head on down to Soho’s Broadwick Street where the Warner Bros posse have recreated the set of Central Perk, the iconic café from US sitcom Friends. All the requisite details are there – oversized coral sofa, chintzy high stools, garish neon signs – as well as some cheesy additions (Friends posters, a flatscreen TV playing classic episodes). You can sign up for a voucher to get a free cup of coffee (drink-in only and one per person, they say), which is exactly what we did this morning.

Read Time Out’s article about it here.
